“Francis Scott Key was a slaveholder and a colonizationist who hoped that the United States would be liberated not only from British oppression, but also the presence of African American’s in its midst. Like so many of his generation, Key imagined his nation comprising of free white men pursuing manly independence, and he wrote this motif into his famous song”

3 Things
1) I will never sing the “Star Spangled Banner” again in life;
2) I will remain seated at the sound of it. No disrespect intended; and
2) My children will never (with my knowing) sing the “Star Spangled banner”. When asked by the teacher why the resistance, they will be prepared to recite the above statement if they so choose. VERBATIM.
“They don’t have have to give us the right answers, if they get us asking the wrong questions”

In HS, I was given detention and kicked out of the Honor Society for not pledging allegiance to the flag. When my teacher called my Mom at work, Mom gave her a few choice words. Your kids are gonna love you; future great Mom award for sure :)
